Article 50 in Plain English

Article 50 of the EU AI Act is about transparency. In simple terms, it deals with situations where people should be told that they are interacting with AI, or that certain content has been generated or manipulated by AI.

It does not mean every internal use of AI has to be announced to everyone. It also does not mean every AI-assisted paragraph in a professional document automatically needs a public label. The exact obligation depends on the system, the content, the context, and whether any exceptions apply.

But the direction is clear: when AI is involved in ways that could affect how people understand, trust, or interpret content, organisations need to think carefully about disclosure.

What Article 50 covers

Article 50 includes several transparency obligations. Providers of AI systems intended to interact directly with people must generally ensure that people are informed they are interacting with AI, unless that is already obvious in the context. Providers of systems that generate synthetic audio, image, video, or text content must ensure outputs are marked in a machine-readable format and detectable as AI-generated or manipulated.

There are also obligations for deployers. For example, deployers of AI systems that generate or manipulate image, audio, or video content constituting a deepfake must disclose that the content has been artificially generated or manipulated. For AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest, disclosure may also be required, subject to specific exceptions, including where there has been human review or editorial control and a person or organisation holds editorial responsibility.

What this means for professional teams

For most professional teams, the Article 50 question is less about adding a label to every document and more about having a clear policy for AI-assisted work.

If AI materially contributes to external content, client work, public-facing materials, or communications on matters of public interest, the team should know how that involvement is handled. Was disclosure needed? Was there human review? Who had editorial responsibility? Was the final version approved before publication or delivery?

Those questions should not be answered from memory after the fact. They should be part of the workflow.

Transparency needs a record

A useful transparency process should answer basic questions. Was AI used? What kind of content did it help create? Was the content internal, client-facing, or public? Was it reviewed by a person? Was disclosure required or expected? Who approved the final version?

This does not turn every AI use into a legal exercise. It simply gives the organisation a way to make consistent decisions and prove how those decisions were made.

A note on timing

Article 50 is scheduled to apply from 2 August 2026, but practical guidance on marking, labelling, and disclosure is still developing. Organisations should avoid two extremes: ignoring transparency until someone asks, or assuming every AI-assisted document needs the same disclosure treatment. The better approach is to build a process now, before the guidance is finalised and the deadline has passed.
